    Default Carborundum hone questions

    Hello gents!

Well today I got a carborundum - razor hone #102. It's a little pocket hone, and came in the original box. So what are people's experiences with this type of hone? The box says to use a thin layer of lather when using this hone. Never heard that one before... Are these not meant to be soaked then? I read these are good for after an 8k norton. Hoping that holds true. It would be nice to have something to work with after 8k.

If I'm right and my memory hasn't completely abandoned me, the Carborundum 102 is a barber hone, right? I know that with other barber hones lots of guys use lather. Some will soak or at least wet them, but lather seems pretty common, and on my Swaty it works great. Great for touch-ups!

So I'd say give it a shot with lather and see how it works. Don't forget to lap it though (or at least test for flatness).

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I actually thought that I had a # 102, just looked, & I do not. I do have several Carborundums & some rated for razors. I can say for sure that the ones I have rated for razors (rated meaning, the dang box says so), I would never put after an 8K. I have never had a Carborundum that was as smooth as a Norton 8K. I feel they were rated for razors at a time when there was less of a choice out there.

Below is a link that JimR started about the # 102, he is a much better honer than I am & I totally believe his statements on the # 102, even though I do not own the # 102.

    Just my thoughts,

    Hi

I have a decent amount of barbers hones and i use many of them.
The carborundum 102 is Nice and i use it when traveling.
Its my favorite carborundum hone and i like the small size.
Use it dry, wet, wet with lather , wet with handsoap.what ever you like.
    I usually Do water Only.

Ps. Many barber hones are crap and around 6k or less.
But some are Excellent and between 15-30K.
The carborundum 102 is an excellent quick cutting hone that i would rate to 10K.

Excellent vid, thanks for posting this. I have watched Glen's videos on honing and never even thought to see if he did different hones. And you were spot on, all my questions were answered in the vid.
