Suehiro Cerax grit scale
I've searched & couldn't find any results. Does anybody know if they use a grit scale similar to SHapton or something else? THe Nortons IIRC are 3.0 micron @ 8k & the Shaptons I believe are something like 1.84 @ 8k.
I'm thinking of getting a 6k Cerax & just wondering where it would fit compared to other offerings (SHapton pro/GS for instance).
I guess one way to ask would be: has anyone shaved off a 6k Cerax & did it feel similar to the Norton or coarser?

From what I have seen, they are close to Shapton stones, and most japanese manufacturers use the same grit scale. There are some where 1 micron is 12 and some that 1 micron is 15, but those are small differences. The Nortons are US made stones and there is a difference in the scale, but even if they are "coarser" they still feel nice, it might be because of the abrasive they use.
A stone made from Aluminum oxide will feel finer than it's actual grit compared to a Silicon Carbide stone, and both will feel coarser to a Silicon oxide stone etc.. An example are the coticules. Their actual grit is around 3 to 5k, but feel like a 10k because their garnets are spherical.
A 6k stone is too coarse, by my standards to be used as a finisher no matter the particle size. You will need a stone at least as fine as 8k.

Oh, don't worry, I have lots of finishers to play with! This is strictly HAD-related. I might even bite the bullet (or highly-valued Yen in this case) & get some GS eventually. Just curious about the Cerax since I know Alex of the Japan blade uses them.

Thanked: 38The grits of my cerax 1000/6000 looks very close to the grit of my 1000/6000 king. I know it's not a measure but only my feeling.
I am not using my cerax on razors, not because of the grit, but because of the soft binding material, softer than the king's.
It's great for knives because it's eating a lot and fast, but I don't recommend it on razors because keeping it flat is a true issue.

Is this the cerax or "new cerax" you have? Not sure what the difference even is; only that they make both.

The new cerax are a bit harder, and maybe a bit faster. If the cerax, new cerax and the "legendary" Gokumyo use the same scale, since they are all from Suehiro, 10k grit=1 micron for their scale. That means, 6k could be fine enough for a finisher.
