I think you're right about it being an Ark. Pictures would help though.

But you can ask him to take only some pictures.

Maybe is possible that with the time the barber had make some confusion between Arkansas and Mississippi but at the end is the same stone.

I've never held one but looks like every other example of a translucent ark i've seen.

There is a really cool thread about arkansas stones being imported into germany, check it out here.

    Hi Daniel,

that surely looks like an old translucent ark. Which size is it?
Can you remove it from the box and look at the backside?

I have purchased some of these stones also from cutlers and barbers in the thuringian area.

Attached some detailed pictures from two stones, that seem to be comparable.Name: IMG_4554.jpg

As already mentioned, most of these old translucent arks are much better than the new mined ones, even for straight razor honing.

Modine has also reported some great information on these stones at:

So the famous Mississippi stone is novaculite and a finisher. Anyone who knows about them, or has any old scripts or books about that stone? How do we distinguish them from the Translucent Arkansases? We know, like, everything there is about Jnats and UK hones but nobody knows about the Mississippi stones?
