Thanked: 0After 4k - possible with pastes or mandatory stone?
Hi all,
Seeing as the Norton 4k/8k combo is out of stock many places in Canada, I set at my restored razor with 800, 1000 and 2000 grit wetordry glued to three small tiles. I checked the bevel with the MMT.
I've managed to bring it to shaving-arm-and-leg hair level, and it'll take the hair from my cheek with pulling. Chin is a no-go. Just too thick.
Would it be possible to progress from hereonin with pastes? 3uM is, from my understanding, equal to an 8K stone.
From then on, 0.5uM on leather and then leather itself.

Yes it is theoretically possible, but not easy as the strops will tend to create a rounded edge.
Have you considered using micro mesh. It is basically very fine sand paper, and can stand in for hones. In the same manner as you have used wet or dry.

Thanked: 275I'd agree that your best bet is to find a finer-grit film or sandpaper. You can't buy abrasive-coated film at the local body shop, but it's available from woodworking supply stores.
My rule of thumb is that 15K grit is about 1 micron. So there's a long way between your finest film and typical 0.5 micron CrOxide paste.

Thanked: 0I can find a Henckels 3/8k finishing stone locally for $130. Most Norton combo stones come to $100 with shipping...and they might get nabbed at the border. Perhaps safest to by local. Rumor that these are Naniwas, albeit lower grade. Opinions, gents?

I talk about using paste how you want here. It's how I sharpen all of my razors and I get great edges.

Thanked: 275Get the Norton's from Lee Valley Tools -- no border involved, but you'll have some shipping costs:
Norton Water Stones - Lee Valley Tools
They have diamond plates and other goodies as well.

Thanked: 0Aye! There's the rub...with shipping and tax, comes to 110. I'd sooner drive to Ares than wait! As long as the stones are much of a muchness
