Thread: king 1k or nortom

Recommendations?? For personal use to maintain my own razors just starting out honing?? Which would u prefer low costs??

I got a King 250/1k . It is only 2" wide compared to my 4/8k Norton. The 250/1k is for some serious reshaping and bevel starting NOT maintenance. I got the 4/8 for touch up and small fixes on e-Bay buys. The 3" wide might be a little easier to learn on as you can keep the whole blade on the stone taking some of the learning curve out of it. Just my opinion based on my experience. You might think about a barbers hone too . Cheaper yet and more made for maintenance.

A 1k is not something to maintain your razor, its more for serious work as said before. I would go for the Norton 4k/8k. I am just starting out and I have one and love it. I have seen a lot of members rave about it here. You can do everything on it from bevel setting to finishing. With the 4k/8k you can do maintenance and restore a blade that is completely dull. Anyhow I have both the king and the Norton 1k and the King is a little smoother and a slower cutter than the Norton.

in that case I have both and like them both. I have used my Norton a lot more and it seems to cut faster, the king is smoother. If I was doing heavier work I would use the Norton. Otherwise I would use the king. Im new to honing but this is my experience for what little its worth.

go with the king 1k. It should do just fine as a bevel setter!

I have both, I like both.
I think that for heavy bevel setting the Norton is preferable because it's harder, wears more slowly and stays flat longer. Sometimes I need to re-lap the King before the bevel setting is complete.
