I'm on the wrong coast to help much but try Cutlery, woodworking, and hardware stores in that order. If you look for a woodcraft store they have an ok selection of hones lower than 8k and above that they have phig's.

    Good luck

I don't know about long island, but tools for working wood sells a whole range of stones in brooklyn. They are good folks and are genuinely excited about what they sell. It's more woodworking focused, but they have waterstones, oilstones and some honing compounds.

Let me give you a little hint:

When a New member makes a statement like that, the first place I look is here, to see how they introduced themselves to SRP and what their experience is or at least what they claim it is...

You have to be careful here.
First almost all water stones are made in Japan, Norton is not but is one of the most popular stones for newbies and experienced honers alike.
Second there is many many kinds of Japanese water stones and not all work with razors, the ones that are proven to work are Naniwa Super stones, Chosera, Shapron Glass and Pro. Suehiro also has stones that work but they are not readily available outside of Japan and pricey.
