First Stones
Somebody help me, this is getting out of control. LOL It all started with a razor Lynn let me borrow. The next thing I know I'm ordering one just like it because I'm hooked on the shave. Then I think--I better get one more to use while this one is out getting honed. Then one more, just because and then I need a good vintage razor, of coarse, so one more. You get the idea, and I'm sure this sounds all too familiar to many . Along with the razors a nice little collection of brushes, soaps, aftershaves, etc is also beginning to take form. After a little lesson on edge touch up and a introduction to honning from Lynn...
To make a long story short, A Norton 4000/8000 combo and a Naniwa 12000 just arrived at my door. I also have some razors on the way to start practicing on. The adventure begins. (I originally just had the Naniwa 12000 in my shopping cart to maintain my edges, but then the Norton combo somehow slipped in there....I guess I need to go ahead and get a 1000 on the way too.)

Thanked: 13245You won't be sorry the Norton 4/8 is a workhorse hone..
Make sure you search out the JaNorton thread, that is specifically targeted to using just the Norton 4/8, it is a bit of reading and watching but there are some real pearls of wisdom in there...

Use them in good health!

No, no help from this site. The only help you're going to get from us is how to give those razors and stones good use, but to stop the RAD, HAD, SAD BAD, no, not from us! LOL!
By the way, good choice of stones and good thinking on the razors! I have only two words, "Chosera 1k". Double O

Thanked: 247Does 1k qualify as one word?
OP: Nice try, but you'll get no help here. Unless ofc you decide to go cold turkey. In which case, we'll as gladly give our addresses so you can get all the stuff out of your house quick.

I feel your pain my friend. Once your face gets a taste of the straight there's no going back. Resistance is futile.
Cheers.

Second and third the Chosera. I have the Norton 1k and King 1k as well and they are not even close in comparison to the Chosera. You can however set a bevel and do everything you want on the 4k/8k. If you learn to set a bevel on the 4k side of that NOrton you will be able to set a bevel on anything with a lower grit. Plus I feel it takes off less metal which is good when you are learning to hone because you will be repeating the process several times.

I love mine. When I got mine it improved my bevel setting skills on other stones as well. It gave me a point of reference to what my bevels should be like. I learned I was not using enough pressure and not doing as many laps as I need to when setting the bevel on higher grit stones like the Norton 4k. The feedback is amazing and it will tell you exactly how much pressure to use. I know it sounds weird but this stone really talks to you. It wasn't until I started using my Chosera that I really started to get and respond to feedback on other stones.
