Default Just ordered a set of Shaptons :D

Well, after honing for over a year on nothing but my trusty Nortons (220/1k & 4k/8k) I decided it was time to upgrade the arsenal. The edges that I've been getting from the Nortons have been progressively getting better over time, however having shaved with some edges from a Shapton 16k, the Norton 8k just isn't as good as I'd like it to be. So after getting permission from the CFO, earlier this morning I ordered the Shapton 4k, 8k, 16k value pack from SRD. I know that I'm being a little redundant with getting another 4k and 8k stone, but I figured why not. However, what I'm really looking forward to is the 16k. I've heard great things about it, and I've been in need of something above an 8k for a while. I'll be sure to check back in and let everyone know my initial impressions after they're delivered sometime early next week.

Shaptons are great. I have shapton gs 4,8,16,30k
For the later 2 or at least the latest one Good Steel is needed that can take the edge.
    Congratulations and have fun!

A few months ago i did get the Shapton 4k/8k/16k and i can honesty say that im very pleased with my purchase. I think my nortons will be collecting dust for a while for sure. Shaptons are easy to use, with wonderful feedback, and fast.

I bought the 16k as a finisher, but I see that I will have to buy a whole set after some time. Very nice stones, they are really worth the money you pay for them.

I received the shipment notification from SRD earlier today, so now it's time for UPS to do their job. It'll probably be Tuesday before they show up and I probably won't be there to get them since that's my bowling league night. At least I'll have something to look forward to after league is over.

I have never regretted buying them, talk about an "Exact" system of honing

I even spent the insane $$$$ on the 30k the DGLP and the Hone Holder and I am still happy with the purchases... BTW you really do not need all that stuff

The Shapton 16K is an excellent finisher that you can rely on for consistently good edges. If you like a nice harder feeling stone with excellent feedback, you will enjoy these.

    Have fun

This is going to be fun when we get together. I remember when you were "wet behind the ears" when I was showing you a little about honing. Now that you have some experience under your belt with your Norton's, I truly look forward to showing you the ropes of honing on the GS's. THese stones literally will tell you when to move on to the next stone. I will get back with you as soon as my family personal business is finished today & we will get you to the next level of honing...

May I humbly recommend a stone holder?

The glass stones are thin and they are too long for the top of the norton box.

I've only been honing with the Norton 4/8k and the Shapton 16k as a finisher since last October/November when I started honing. Excellent set up for me. I'm completely satisfied with the purchase and the edges I started getting immediately. But I've been thinking about picking up the 4 and 8K shapton as well, just for the heck of it. Let us know how you like them.

    Happy Honing
