Thanked: 2What the heck do i have here!!!
So, i picked up my first antique store hone yesterday. I got it home and cleaned off the top. It is Very smooth and hard and a green/grey...olive color. i put a razor to it for final hone this morning, it passed all the tests...i think it was the nicest shave i have ever had
I thought I would post it here to see if any of you guys could help me out by getting some kind of ID on it.
I have no idea what it could be.
thanks for your help

Could the dark spot in the right bottom corner be the remnants of Japanese characters? I don't recognize the stone but it looks pretty fine.

Thanked: 3164It looks like it has been used with oil, so from your description that it is very hard I would guess some sort of novaculite - possibly some sort of LI variant.

Neil

Thanked: 4249At first glance, I would say its a translucent Arkansas, look identical to mine, then i read your description and you said its green/ grey olive color?
So i dont really know, in that case its a LI.

Thanked: 247Put a flashlight on it, and see if it's got any translucence. If it doesn't have any translucence, refer to previous posts.

Depending on the oil that was used on the stone, it could have different colours. I would also vote for a translucent Ark.
I got one which is really green/blue colour because of the oil it has been soaked in. Of course, I have cleaned it, but the colour stays.
If you use petroleum on a translucent ark, with the time it becomes a blueish shining.

Thanked: 2Well, After giving the stone a really good clean last night and letting it dry the color did lighten up some what. I put the flashlight to it and it is transparent, its hard as hell and it cuts slower than.....it is really slow....it sure did put a nice edge on my razor though.
with that being said, i believe it is a transparent arkie.
Thanks everyone for your help!
