    Default Canadian Slate

I've been poking around the internet and came across this guy. Interestingly, the only place I can find it for sale is in the UK.

Buy Canadian honing stone free UK delivery - £14.95

Does anyone have any relevant information regarding this guy?

These should not be confused with the vintage Canadian Oilstone Hones you sometimes see, which are much finer.

These new ones are not finishers - far too course from the experiences of the few people I know who have tried them. In fact, I think they are of limited use altogether.

The following advertisement makes me wonder:

    Name: canadian hone 03.JPG
Views: 639
Size: 67.6 KB

Firstly it calls the stone 1500 grit, then 2500 grit. Let's suppose that 2500 is a JIS rating, that equates to a micron size of 5. Referring to Nortons grit conversion tables, this is somewhere between a Norton 4k and a Norton 8k, with a CAMI rating of around 2000 grit, So, we have to decide for ourselves what grit rating it really is equivalent to.

Secondly, it is referred to both as a 'natural' and a 'silicon carbide' hone. Other ads, like the original, refer to it as a natural slate. Natural slates are composed of quartz, muscovite or illite, biotite, chlorite, haematite and some other natural inclusions, none of which are silicon carbide.

Silicon carbide is only found naturally in very few places, chiefly on the site of old meteorite impacts in the form of moissanite. Nearly all silicon carbide used today is man-made.

The confusion surrounding this stone is that there appear to be at least two examples of it, one of which is clearly a dual-grit man-made silcon carbide stone. It seems that the people offering these stones don't know what they are selling, so I suggest the picture is nothing to go by. The one below is the natural slate version:

While this one is clearly man-made (and has yet another grit rating!):

    Neil

Perhaps we have a typo to contend with too - maybe it's a Chinadian Natural...

I have seen them in TOBS and in those times I would say they were not natural.
Strange is when somebody from Toronto is not able to locate them near your home. Perhaps they are made exclusively for UK market.

LOL I just wanted a Canadian hone to say I shop local! I don't think Chinadian qualifies anymore. They did make it confusing as possible didn't they.

"The Chinadian, only sold in the UK!".

MrRyder, Like Neil mentioned if your looking for a local stone, your best bet to find something suitable for razors will be a Canada oilstone, wich i found 2 variances of these stones like the ones pictured below.
