Actually, it was a flea market score... I did the leg work for it. Dang near walked right past it (closed up, under some other junk). He had about 8 straight razors, all of them looked like rusty twigs of steel, $15 each of course... .and then on the other side of the table, underneath some trash, I find this... lol.. I probably coulda talked him down from $7 but I just paid it and strolled away. Sometimes you just get lucky, I've been looking for one of these for a long, long time and have never scored one - I've found a few BBW's and Coti's in stores and shops but never a Thurry.

Excellent find Brad! I've found a few hones in the wild but nothing complete with box. A couple weeks ago I did the same as you, I almost walked right by a box of hones on the floor in an antique store. I was very happy to discover a nice 7" x 1.5" thuringian and a swaty, both for $15!

And 20 years ago, the things were all over the place, and I never wanted one, because they were pointless for sharpening up the old hunting knives or crappy kitchen knives.

Nice looking stone. I would have gambled and paid $30, even if I didn't know what a Thuringian stone was. Nice clean old stone.

Brad, pretty sure the picture on yours is the same as on these J G Escher & Sohn labels. Sorry I don't have a better pic to offer but those went to a good home.

Well the logo with the 2 man barber scene could indeed be a precurser of the later Escher scene. But also the Escher labelled barber scene has some variations.
Jimmy - I think even in the pictures you posted the persons are slightly different on the stones/boxes.
The scene on undreams stone looks a little bit more rough and less detailed so it might be older.

The following pictures shows it compared to a barber scene on a german labelled Escher - which is also different from the english Escher versions in Jimmy's pictures.



The text is a little bit circuitious and not typical for Escher. Also there is no remark on the long history of the escher stones which is typical for escher labels. From the orthographie the word "muß" is written with "ß" instead of double s - that indicates that the label has been printed after 1900.

So, it is only a guess, but the stone and label might come from another thruiringian company that sells whetstones (there have been quite a few), the Escher company might have taken over the logo, when the companies name changed from Escher & Co to Escher & Sohn and they looked for a new label but with a certain brand recognition to the old 4 man barber scene.
