Well I dont know if I am breaking against some rule, but here is a copy from a German straight manufacturer.
It should cover all straights.
"Die Lebensdauer eines Rasiermessers beträgt bei ordentlicher Behandlung
zwei bis drei Generationen. Die Schärfe hält ungefähr 1000 Rasuren, dann
sollte das Rasiermesser erneut auf dem Stein abgezogen werden. Danach
hält es wieder 1000 Rasuren usw.
Häufiges abziehen auf dem Stein veringert die Lebensdauer beträchtlich."

"The life of a razor is in decent treatment
two to three generations. The sharpness holds about 1,000 shaves, then
the razor should be deducted again on the stone. Then
considers it again in 1000 shaves etc.
Frequent pull on the stone veringert (shortens?)the life considerably. "It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Thanked: 0I don't want to hijack the thread but I just need some clarification.
If I have a paddle strop loaded 0.5 micron chromium oxide paste, I can maintain me "shave Ready" edge for quite some time. Eventually will I need a stone? If so what would be a good grit/stone to get?
I was thinking of either Norton 4/8k or Naniwa 10 or 12 k.

The next step down would be the 10-12kand learn to maintain the edge, 5-10 or so light laps.
When you begin to actually hone your razor go to the 4-8k.
This is only my opinion but with a finisher you can extend the life of an edge for a very long time short of any damage/dings etc.It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Thanked: 1936I started out thinking pastes are best when I started this sport, but as my knowledge of stones grew my desire to use pastes diminished. I'm with Neil that if you do use paste, ensure it's on a flat surface. Personally, I feel that the Shapton GS 16K is about a good of a barber hone as you can get...no slurries, no fancy tricks, just x-strokes till it starts to create "sticksion" and then go 2-3 more passes, strop, shave. It's more foolproof IMO...but that's just an opinion.
