Thank you for the info. Now that I have the naniwa 10k (1k, 5k, 8k, 10k, CrOx strop) do you think I will notice the difference with the 12k? (Please give me an excuse to buy it, I'm addicted :-) )

Here's your question phrased properly "Do you think I have the honing and shaving skills to tell the difference of adding Naniwa 12k to my arsenal, given that I have Naniwa 8k, 10k and CrO strop?".

I think the only correct answer is - "Nobody here can tell you", and given how much we know you, any speculation would be just foolishness.

However, if you want an excuse to buy the hone and have the disposable income to do so, use the 'Gugi told me to' and go ahead and buy it. It will make you happy and in my opinion the $150 or so it'll cost you is well worth not having to keep second guessing yourself. Even if you can't tell any difference with your new hone, trying to achieve it will lead to a lot of hours rubbing razors on the hones and that should be a rather enjoyable way to spend your time, if you are really addicted as you say you are.

    Have fun!

Another opinion on the Naniwa SS 10k:

    It is superb!

Never mind thinking about other high end finishers, if you have a solid setup with the Naniwa SS 10k as a finisher,
you do not need anything else. The Naniwa SS 10k is the "lowest grit" high end finishing stone I encountered.
It is on par with Shapton 16k and coticules when it comes to shaving comfort directly off the stone, in my opinion.

If you do not get comfortable shaves of the 10k, it might be your fault.
That does not mean HAD won't strike and you end up buying a Nakayama, a 30k stone or similar

I am going to say I agree with this and the reply below it, but I qualify it by saying I don't know from personal experience. my naniwas arrive on monday. I only went as far as the 10k b.c on his site Phil said you don t have to go past that. and I'm only starting out.

I stuck at 8k until I could get comfortable shaves consistently and now I feel it's made it a lot easier for me in feeling the difference when moving up to higher grit synthetics and natural finishers. I think this is a good way to go about things imo, also I have heard that the 10k is better than the 12k in some peoples opinions.
possibly something about microchipping on certain steels? but not sure my memory could be crosswiring different posts i've read so don't quote me on it.
