That comes from one of my all-time fave films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, so I just can't help myself:

My 8th grade shop teacher told me that if I kept my mouth shut everyone would think I was stupid ...... if I opened it everyone would know I was stupid ...... :p Sort of the same thing as the quote turned around. Back in those days they didn't treat kids like there are no losers. Nowadays everyone is a winner ....... no matter how they preform ..... but that is a topic for another thread I guess
I know what you mean, Jimmy! Our latin master used to excel himself marking my work - I particularly recall '...absolutely abysmal effort...' in red at the foot of the page on my homework. I guess that's why I had to look-up the latin quote! Even our headmaster was not immune to it - the boy who lived next to me got '...has the makings of a first class sloth...' on his end of term report. The french master was a real artist though. He considered us worthless rubbish if we got anything wrong, and made me stand in the wastepaper basket on numerous occasions. If anyone entered the classroom, for chalk or something, he was asked to enquire why I was in the bin. I was told to reply - under the co-ercion of six-of-the-best from the headmaster 'because I am rubbish'
Happy days....
My teachers would just stare at me, shake their head saying, "Stupid is, as stupid does." :(
In 8th grade I was a 'rebel without a cause' and my science teacher told me that some day I would be "making little ones out of big ones." IOW, in prison breaking rocks. So far, by the grace of God, I have been able to avoid that prophecy. One day at a time.
