    Default lapping gone wrong

    i bought this from b&q

    Lawnmower Blade Sharpening Block, 5037151007041

on the box it comes in it actually calls it a diamond hone and doesnt say anything about lawnmowers that is just what it is called on the internet. i either used the 300 or 400 grit side i cant remember now but it scratched the hell out of my nani 8k. is this the wrong thing for lapping it looks exactly the same on what i have seen other people use on youtube.

    help please

I have two concerns about this diamond block. Is it flat and will the plates stay adhered to the block. The closest equivalent in the US is sold by harbor freight, and suffers both problems.

If the block is flat and not loose, did you wear in the plate? ie sharpen a lawn mower blade, or run a screw driver shaft over it.

If the hone is scratched along the length of the hone it will be fine. Just wear in the plate and lap it again under running water to both protect the diamond plate and deal with any grit contamination.

I do use a diamond plate like this, it might be the exact type of diamond plate, temporarily, before I buy a new one, probably an atoma plate.
Yes, they do leave deep scratches right out of the box, but if you use them for a few times and the big particles that leave deep scratches are removed, they become quite smooth, and useful for creating slurry. They are quite reliable for lapping and slurry making purposes actually, after the initial breaking or I don't know how it's called. Lap it with a hard, coarse stone, rinse it, and then, it should work fine.
Some models of the DMT diamond plates also have those holes. so, are you sure this was the diamond plate you were looking for?
