Noob needing some opinions
So I am now where near ready to hone my own blades, but was wondering what grit would be a good all around grit stone to have? Not looking to set a bevel, just a hone for touch up work. I know you guys will give great advice, that's why I love this place?

+1 on the Naniwa 12k. You have other options but for the price you cannot beat it.

For the price I love my naniwa 12k, if money isnt a problem, the zulu grays, or shapton glass 16k.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Thanked: 1184My first stone was a Norton 4/8 combo. I went with this because I had read that back when this forum started it was about the best thing going and you could do anything with it. I have shaved off mine for about 8 months now and just starting to consider spending more bucks on a finish hone. The quarter is still in the air on which one to get. The longer it's in the air the better the chance of me getting a Zulu Grey. What ever you do think 3" wide.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Hi One2mny;
If you are in SE Kansas check out some of the local antiques in Coffeyville, Iola, Neodesha, Independence etc. You can almost always find some nice barber hones for next to nothing if you are looking to refresh an edge. Leave the coticules and Y/G Eschers alone they are no good. Happy hunting.

Well, won a Swaty hone on the "Bay". Waiting for it in the mail so I may begin my journey of honing my own blades.
