Thanked: 0Stone Identification
Any chance you guys can help me identify this stone? I don't know much of anything about it, and I'd hate to ruin a razor on it if it isn't a "proper" stone for SRs. I picked it up for $10, so, if it isn't any good for razors, I can still use it for my knife collection.

From the looks of it I would guess a coarse synthetic, probably not useful for razors.

Thanked: 0That's pretty much what I was afraid of. It doesn't have any markings/names on it, so just having people take a look is the only way I know of to figure it out. If anyone else has any more specifics, please feel free to chime in.

Does it appear to have been used with oil ? When I get an unknown stone I'll take a pocket knife and try it with water as the vehicle. Check out the scratch pattern with an eye loupe before I try the stone with a razor.

Proper white balance and correct focus could help identify the stone.

Looks like a carborundum stone to me.

Thanked: 0I actually haven't received it yet. It was an Ebay buy, so it won't be here until next week. I'll definitely look to see if there's been any oil use though. I have tons of pocket knives, so that's a great tip. What type of scratch pattern should I expect to see if it is a razor stone?

Thanked: 0Haha. Indeed. Sorry about the picture. As I mentioned in my response to Jimmy, it's an Ebay purchase that hasn't come in, so this is the only picture I have. I should have probably asked before purchasing it, but what's done is done I guess. Once it finally arrives, I'll try to get a better picture on here.

Thanked: 38Normally a natural stone has a specific weight between 2.7 and 3. Sintetic stones usually are below 2.
Yes there are a few exceptions.
