Thanked: 17Need some help - lapping stones
Brief history - I've successfully hone a couple of razors. Currently have at 1500, 4K/8Kcombo, Naniwa12K, pasted strop and daily strop. With that combo I've gotten my razors in decent shape until recently.
In the past I've lapped my stones on 400 grit wet/dry on a ceramic tile under running water and that seemed to work fine. However, decided to get a DMT 325. Here's where the real bad problems begin.
When I tried lapping with it the first time I had horrible scratches on my stones. They would run with the direction I was lapping. If I went really light under running water I wouldn't get them. If I used any sort of pressure, or if the stone got stuck, I would get these scratches. I've felt along the edges of the DMT and don't notice anything that would explain it, also don't feel any abnormalities on the surface.
Am I doing something wrong or is it a possibility that my DMT is defective?
Thanks,
Charlie

On new DMTs they recommend breaking them in with a plane iron or chisel. I don't have those so I use the shank of a 12" screw driver. Wet the plate, add a couple of drops of dish soap and rub the dickens out of the shank of the screwdriver. Any metal object will work and it will knock down divots, uneven diamonds. Pay attention to the corners of the edges. I think that will improve the results.
