Thanked: 9Order: Yellow - Escher - Swaty
I was wondering what is the order for these?
I believe Swaty is finer than Yellow Belgian and Escher is finer than Yellow too but not sure how these three are ordered?
Thanks

I think that if your using any one of the three the order is immaterial because they are all finishing stones. I can't see starting with one and going with each of the others in succession. I don't think you would accomplish anything.
I think the yellow and escher being natural stones can vary to quite a degree depending on source while the swaty will be consistant so its hard to compare. I think in general the swaty is about a 10K which is about what the usual yellow is and I imagine the escher is the same.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 55I agree with the Duke, there's not much variation between the three and the natural stones will have the greatest variation. They are all generally the same grit size though. They all cut at different speeds which is pretty relevent. The Belgian is the slowest, the Escher a bit faster and the Swaty is the fastest. The faster it hones the higher the potential for overhoning.
Hope that helps.

Thanked: 9Thank you very much, guys!
I usually use Coticule, then sometimes after it I do some Escher laps and finish with CrO2. Other times I use just Coticule or one of the other hones (Escher or Swaty) and again finish with CrO2. It's almost funny - my Escher is kind of narrow (1"), and my Swaty is kind of short (chips, chich I don't want to sand out). I tend to use the Escher more for smilies, I think
The Swaty has been resting lately...
Cheers

Experiment!
I always recommend people experiment. Try different combos and let us know. Although I sell belgians, nortons, and DMTs, I'm ALWAYS trying new stones and new combinations because I just love to hone. I keep a collection of "study" razors I use in these experiments because razor steel varies so much in the type of steel used and in the heat treating. One thing I found out recently from a customer was that his vintage Double Duck really didn't like the Norton 8k. It microchipped the Duck and it took a coticule to get it back. That piece of information is a very specific knowledge object that only came to be known through experimentation.
