    Default naniwa question

Hi all, I dont know how I did it but there is a really small chip on the toe of my razor all I have for a hone is my 12k naniwa.. is it possible to fix the chip with just this stone? As I said it is a really small chip. I have managed to smooth it out on either side of the edge so it doesn't scratch my face when I shave. Razer still shaves fine for now but just want it fixed and prefer to do it myself.

It's not designed for it but heck if you wanted to take a 3000 mile trip and all you had was a bicycle it would get you there...eventually. Do yourself a favor and get a lower grit hone for repair work.

It would be a crazy long task to remove material at 12K. Pretty much the way it goes is the lower grits like 1 and 4k remove the material and shape the edge. The higher grits are used to polish and refine that edge to make it sharp and smooth. So really you would have to smooth that edge for an exceptional period of time to get anywhere. And if you kept going until near forever you could accomplish that task. So the short answer is no.

You can order some lapping film from Lee valley or best sharpening stones. I would recommend 12 micron(1800 grit) 5 micron(4k give or take) and 3 micron(8k)and your naniwa 12k and you would be ok. I have used film a bit. I find it works and is inexpensive but I find that there are many things you cant do with it. It can scratch and tear. If you have the funds a Norton 4/8 is money better spent.

Just get a 4/8 Norton combo and you should also get a cheap razor to practice on before you start working on your everyday razor. Assuming you only have 1 here. If you just work on your best 1 you may be out a razor for awhile. That is, if you don't pick it right up. your going to have to go all the way back to bevel set to take a chip out. Most start with a 1k at that level but it can be done with a 4/8. Your just back on that long road again.

You may find a cutlery shop that knows somebody that has a friend that can hone razors :<0) Or you could send it out and save some cash for awhile.

    I can attest to this,
I have done full bevel sets on the Naniwa 5k, removed larger than minor edge defects (small chips) and such.
Sometimes if the bevel is so-so I will still use the 5k and not drop to the 1k.
Why I do not know but then again I find a tranquility in honing.

I am with you. I have restored more than a few razors with only a 4/8K.

I enjoy the ride almost as much as the destination.
