Thanked: 20Norton 8K
The other day my son happened to use my nortons for his hunting knife. I did not think it was that big of deal as that I to use them for my knifes at times. I am not sure what he did but when I went to work on one of my razors I noticed he had dug scratches into the center of the stones. I lapped out the stones until the deep scratches in the center was gone, however, now I find I have scratches all over my 4/8K stones that will not lap out. I scrubbed and cleaned my lapping stone but that did not help either. Does anyone have an suggestions?

Thanked: 1371If the rest of the surface is flat and you can't feel them when you run a razor over them, it's no big deal.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

What are you using to lap them. If the media is fine enough you should be able to take the scratches out.

I don't get the scratches-he must be digging in with the point. I sharpen some pretty big knives on my Nortons with just my usual few figure-8 cleaning laps with a DMT 325 (but no scratches). Have you tried a DMT?
There are many roads to sharp.

I bet he's raising the heel as he comes off the stone on each stroke, dragging the point.
