Thread: Norton 8K color

Today I received my 4/8 norton from woodcraft.

I noticed that the 8K side is not colored eqauly throughout the stone.
There are a couple of wide streaks that are a bit lighter than the rest.
Is this normal / common?

my 1/4 does not have this.

And on one end, there is a slight gap between the 4K and 8K sides where I could slip a thin piece of paper through if I wanted.

Default advice would probably be to send it back, but as long as the stone itself is good I'd rather not send it back because I really don't look forward to do the postal service hustle.

That gap bothers me a little, but I wouldn't worry about the streaks. I have a dark streak running lengthwise in mine and it works just fine.

I've recently started lapping my 4/8K with my new 1K, and it seems to be working well. Maybe I won't want to get a flattening stone after all... The 1K puts a nice polish on the 4K and 8K. You could probably use your 4K to polish your 8K if you wanted, but that might just be too nuts.

I'd contact Woodcraft with your concerns and ask for a replacement. They should be good about it.

Agreed, send it back. If there is a gap twix the stones it means the epoxy wasn't evenly applied and water will get in there and with time may work its way further and you may wind up have two separate stones.

Mild dissent here, if only cause I'll also do anything to avoid post office hassles.

Even if the two halves eventually come apart, epoxying them back together's easy as can be.

I sell Norton 4k/8k stones and check each stone for quality before I ship. In the blue box is a little slip of paper which says that the stone may have color variations, that this is normal, and is not an indicator of a problem with quality. This is true also of natural stones such as the arkansas stones and the belgian stones. It's just cosmetic. The part about the gap between the two sides of the stone IS a quality problem and if you don't want to send it back, just smear some epoxy in their to keep the crack from propagating and widening.
