    Default honing with the coticule

I was honing with my dressante coticule and noticed that if i used the same slurry and watered it down it was losing its sharpening abilities.

so I started adding mini laps with a dmt between honing. When i took it to the dmt after honing some circles and halfstrokes there was a very noticeable rough noise which dissappeared after 2 circles on the dmt, as if it was removing a layer of hardened slurry or metal particles.

The biggest problem i had with this coticule was rough edges. it seems like the coticule clogs up very quickly with the honed metal particles and dulls the razor.

just another thing to try ifyour having trouble with your coticule.

oh as well as that because of the roughness of the dmt, when finishing i made a very thick white slurry with the slurry stone and washed it off, it gives a lovely smoothness to the edge

    kind regards
    Alex

I noticed the same thing happening when using my Belgian coticule. I am just starting to learn how to hone. I work a lot and find myself too tired to practice much. But while on vacation I got some time to focus and actually got to the point I was getting a good edge on my razor.

Then after working some more on it, there would be a catch somewhere on the stone. I am sure this chipped the blade. Unfortunately I never could get a satisfactory edge. I wonder if it was actually pieces of metal or slurry building up in cracks in the stone?

My 2 cents, the coticule, like any stone, needs to be cleaned (swarf removed as you hone). I never go more than 20 strokes on my coticule without using my hands to rub away the swarf under running water, if some of it is stubborn , then my DMT 1200 to lightly remove the metal build up.
