Thanked: 0Using Shapton Stones
Hi all. First time posting here. Have learned a lot but have much more to learn.
I have the 1000, 5000 and 8000 Shapton stones as shown here : Shapton and Jende Products - Double Reed Supplies
I just want confirmation that these stones will be just fine for honing my straight razors.
I'm also coming to think that I should pick up a finishing stone. Should I get the 16k Shapton glass stone or a different one?

That set would be fine, the shapton ceramic stones are awesome!
I would stick to the 8k for now unless you love to spend money, an 8k will give you very nice shave. Once you have mastered the 8k and get a nice shave, I would then consider the 16k.

I have the Shapton Pro series of hones.
From my experience they are as good as anything else out there..
Yeah, the 16 (15 on the domestic version) would be what I'd get for the next step.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 485I only have a Norton 4/8 and the Shapton 16k; I love the Shapton 16k, it's quick and wonderful for refreshing the edge. I'd highly recommend the 16k.
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 12I have the Shapton 2, 4, 8, and 16. They do a fine job with little fuss. I also use the Naniwa 8 and 12k. The Naniwa stones have a different feel than the Shapton and the 12k result is very hard to tell apart from the 16k. Given what you have Shapton for a finisher is sensible. In the end, it is worth getting a selection, if you can. Nothing like personal experience and one more acquisition disorder.

Thanked: 15I just started honing, and use a Naniwa 1k, Shapton 5 and 8 k like yours then finish on a Nani 12k. That being said, I like both, but I do have some more shaptons coming... I have a bit of OCD and feel dirty mixing stones... lol. Love the Shaptons though. A finisher could never hurt though, unless your talking about the pain of being separated from your money...

Thanked: 14If you don't mind me adding a question to the thread, does anyone find the jump from Shapton Pro 1k to 5k too much? (I ask because I have a 1k and was surprised to see there's no 3k or 4k in the range.)

1-5 is fine, the shapton stones cut fast. Anything in the middle would be wasted.
