Default Advice needed, what to do next?

    Hi,

I am attempting to hone a razor using a Coticule. I think the bevel is set ok as I can get it to shave arm hair and when I do the thumb nail test it feels like it is grabbing all along the blade.

But it is no where near sharp enough to pass the hanging hair test.

I started with a slurry and worked it down a few drops of water at a time, then I have done approx 100 laps just using water.

My question is do I go back and start the slury process again, will it damage the edge I already have or do I keep persevering with the wate only. Can I over hone the razor.

I know that all Coticules are different, but how many laps, on average should it take to get a razor from a bevel to shave ready.

    Cheers in advance,
    All help appreciated.

    I am going to ask,
    Have you calibrated your HHT?

No razor I hone will pass a HHT for me until stropped due to my hair.

A razor will not tree top my fine arm hair until stropped.

So the next question I have is how does it shave?

Shave with it. It's the only test that means anything. It might be closer than you think.

As was said getting an hht off a coti without stropping isn't typical for me either. I strop and then test. SHave test it as was advised here.

It's hard to know without knowing how close it is, does it violin the hht I assume after strop.
Typically after bevel set for me, I will do about 7 dilutions from milky slurry using dilucot method with frim pressure.
I will then wet the stone but keep the tiniest haze of slurry and do 20/30 half strokes easing pressure slightly before jumping to water only after cleaning stone and razor. From here I wil stay on water untill I get a decent hht after stropping alternating between half strokes and x strokes sometimes circles (there's no hard and fast), but do like to finish on about 50 light x strokes. You really have to get to know your stone, there's a lot of variables. I have a coti that I can get any razor too hht for the life of me.

Thats why I like escher or jnats better! Lol. I can get a coti like edge off 2 of my jnats easier than I can get off my coti. But ymmv as always. Not knocking the cotis at all.

I got as good an edge off of a coticule as I've gotten off of any hone by taking a shave ready razor to a La Veinette. Took 160 X strokes in increments of 30 to get there.

First make SURE the bevel is set. If it aint set you will NEVER get there. Use the search at the top to search using a coticule and you will find plenty of threads advising use on how to use and finish using coticules. Try different methods till you find what works for you and your stone.

I have had more frustration honing this way than any other way.
to make sure the bevel is set, use a sharpie to mark the edge. Then hone and check the edge under a microscope. If the very edge has no marker left then the bevel is set. Shaving arm hair can work even if the bevel is a little off. It depends on how much experience you have knowing when it's set when cutting arm hair. Make sure you are atleast shaving hair from heel to toe .

If your slurry is too thick it can ruin your bevel. Make sure it is like a skim milk or a little thicker. Not thick.

Make x strokes and get the whole edge. Every 30 strokes add a drop of water.
Finish by making 100 strokes or so on clean water. Keep rinsing the water when you are finishing.

The numbers are estimates, do not take them too literally.
you need to learn the feel of the razor and how it bites the stone to know when to dilute.

I see a lot of guys hone by holding the Coticule and using pressure with their finger. I wouldn't recommend this. I lay the stone down somewhere and make x strokes, even if it is a smaller stone.
All that pressure with the finger will frown a razor over time, imo, or flex the edge.
