Question
How long do y'all normally spend on one razor, while honing, to get it shave ready? This is from setting a bevel to stop.

Depends on the Razor and it's condition.
Just did a Genco today start to finish in around 10 minutes.
Did a wedge last night that took closer to 45 minutes. It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Well glen I am having a bit of an issue with that smiling blade I talked with you about in another post. It has a slight smile to it. I have watched all the videos and have tried many different strokes. I mean yeh it could be a possibility that I don't have a solid bevel but then again I don't want to hone the shit out of it. I mean in each sitting I may have put about 5-10 min in bevel setting. I don't think I am over honing because I have tried the "pin test" on both sides of the blade and in several spots.

Thanked: 13249Bevel setting takes as long as it takes, honestly you can't shortcut it or push it faster, either way will set you back farther, It took me a long time to learn to walk away from a razor.. You start adding pressure and you set yourself back because you create a fragile harsh edge.. If you shortcut the bevel set and say to yourself "Yeah that's close enough, I'll catch it on the next stone" you set yourself back because you are polishing the sides and not the edge..
There are some razors that take 20 circles, 20 X strokes and a few light finishing strokes on the 1k and the bevel is rocking, others take hours and 100's of circles over a few sittings to get a true bevel set..

Yeh that's just the thing these razors ARE very different from my knives. Yeh I guess I will try to spend more time on bevel setting.

See every razor that needs to be honed, as an "Individual", don't predetermine what process you will use until you have examined that razor closely.
