Honing Success and I may have HAD! Help me aquire another hone
Well to start off with I had a 1k, and 4k/8k Norton for sharpening plane irons and chisels. So I tried to hone a couple of razors I had when I first started shaving (SR)a couple of months ago. I'd watched a few videos and hey I knew how to sharpen woodworking tools. I soon wised up and heeded the oft told advice on SRP to send them out to a pro. That was good, and the shaves are getting better. Since I probably already have RAD, (I stop by every antique store looking for razors) a couple of weeks ago I got a couple of razors for 5 bucks each at a local antique store; a Geneva cutlery 7n and a Made in Germany blade which says "86 Pearl" on the tang. So I figured at that price I'd give honing another try.
I read the JANORTON thread watched a lot of videos. I sharpened the 7n a la Murray Carter on the 4k/8k stropping the blade on the 8k after setting the bevel on the 4k, finally stropping on newspaper and got a great shave! The German blade I set the bevel on the 1k and then raised a slurry on the 8k and diluting the slurry after every 20 laps or so, till clear water, as per gssixgun's video on 1 stone honing where he says you can do it on any finishing stone. That blade shaved even better.
I then wanted to try to do that 1 stone method on a natural so I've ordered a WHIG and am waiting for it to arrive. So at any rate I thought I would be happy with the 4k/8k,( and I am) but now I want another hone in addition to the WHIG. Does any body have any suggestions?
Thanks to all for all the good tips and advice on SRP

Thanked: 177You are asking the wrong guy. LOL. There are many out there. I have 21 hones at last count(I may a few over). 7 synthetics and the rest are naturals, mostly Jnats 3 cotis and an Escher. Its a rabbit hole, make sure you want to jump in! LOL. Oh and don't forget the strops! There are many many I haven't tried yet. They all work, although some naturals provide a different edge. They all shave great too!

For the one stone hone you could start with the common favorites the escher and coticule. You can go for the naniwa 12k for a synthetic. For more of a challenge you could go a trans ark. The janats are a mine field. Good luck and have fun.
