    The barber I know is 67 and learnt of his dad. His dad honed using a coticule or as he referred to it a soap stone(still in use). Also has a paddle with old school pastes that was his dads. I know he has a few other stones but not sure what they are. Seems they used a number of naturals or carbundum stones.

    Thinking on it they may have used a cutler as well.
