Success!!!
Today I shave tested my first honing, and it worked. This razor was my first ebay purchase, and felt sharp by hand, but was only good at exfoliating the skin. Since then i've purchased a 1000/6000 water stone (soaking type) and a 3000/1000 water stone (spray bottle dampen type). It took a few rounds of the stones, but it now removes hair. Not quite as sharp as the one I bought from whipped-dog, but a massive improvement over the original state. Big thanks to everyone here that has uploaded a video to youtube or provided input to others on hone selection
I'm going to need a bigger bathroom

Thanked: 60Good stuff! I got my first shave off a razor I honed not too long ago, it's a good feeling! Now go use honing practice as a justification to buy a bunch of razors.

Glad you had better luck first time honing than me. My first shave off the first razor I hone was felt like I shaved with sandpaper......

The underside of one of my arms is looking a little bare, but was a good indicator on overall sharpness. The toe of the blade responded a little better first off (slight smile) and using my arm showed that, so I could correct it. Though YMMV.

I did end up with a red spot on my arm where the belly of the blade was more blunt than the toe during the process.

Thanked: 1184Honing can be fun.. Then again sometimes you pull more hair out of your head than you remove testing :<0) Congrats on the success. You may want to go up a couple k at least to help smooth out that shave. I shaved off an 8k for a year. Just got a 12k and still learning how to get the most out of that.

I wanted to get the 12K but they were out of stock and the 16K was too much of a gap (so I thought) from the 6000 I already had. Looking at going up to the 16 though, probably next payday
