Thanked: 0"Scrape of the day"
Mywife bought me a norton 4/8 this christmas!. I sharped up all 3 of my razors so on my arm, they didn't even drag and the hair popped off. The sharpest, smmothest edge they have ever had, under a jewelers loupe .
This morning, they just scraped and scratched over my beard like they were rusted butter knives. Even my "go to " razor was misbehaving, and I had to resort to the DE razor. They would just NOT remove facial hair, unless it was to dig in, and I had to let up for fear of cutting. Any ideas!?!?!?!You can own a jewel and strop each day with loving care, or buy expensive, prettily wrapped garbage and scrape your face a few times with it before it gets to the landfill........

Thanked: 3224Are you sure your bevel was set before going to the 8K and how many strokes did you do on the 8K with how much pressure?

That thread is the most comprehensive collection of information about using the Norton 4/8 you can find, the best part is there are posts from Rank Beginners to Pros in there as well as many vids even a few on lapping them..
That should get you started right

Thanked: 0Thanks to all for responding. Well, My go to razor, an old german magnetized beater was shaving just fine, perfectly even. I've ruined that one somehow til i figure this out. The other two, excellent condition Wade /Butcher beauties have always been "nice to look at....." but they are even worse now. I'll try lapping the stone. I assumed that from the factory, it would be flat enough. I made a slurry with a nagura stone, but it came out like a thick paste. Maybe that was a bad idea? The stone had been soaked for 2-3 hours prior. With the 4 k, it did 20 strokes or so, then about that many on the 8k.

Yep you NEED to lap them so that you KNOW they are FLAT!
Shouldn't be too bad to get them shaving well as long as you didn't press down too hard on them when sharpening.

Thanked: 26Most of the Norton stones , if not flat, are very rough from the factory. Lap it and you will feel the difference.
