Thread: Advice needed on an uneven blade --breadknife it?? Globusmen

I was unable to unload the second pic and the quality is ho-hum. If you need better, please let me know.

Here's the situation. This is a nice little Globusmen that has uneven wear. I've honed 1k, 3k and I've noticed early on that my honing was not cutting evenly stopping about 5/8 from the toe and 1/8 from the heel.

Before I started taking too much steel or getting too radical, I wanted to consult your wisdom. I did read about breadknifing as an option for blades with unever wear... Should I do that and continue on with these following instructions? http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi..._damaged_blade

King 1K
Naniwa 3k,8k,12k

That razor just looks to be just a wee bit off, try adding a second layer of tape to get the bevel to pop even, then drop it back off once it does..

You will not fix anything by breadknifing. That will only make your life harder as you will then have to create a bevel and that will take really long time since you would have a flat where the edge used to be.
The way to correct the problem is to use magic marker and try what kind of stroke will help get contact between the stone and the bevels. I'd start with either forwad x-stroke or rolling x stroke or combo of both, I think that will get the job done.

Yeah. Its not warped, chipped.

So just to be clear. RESET the bevel with TWO layers of tape on the 1K, then RESET the bevel again with ONE layer of tape on the 1K or am I moving to the 3k with the single layer of tape?

Try 2 layers of tape to get an even bevel if that works then do a TNT a couple of times drop to 1 layer and lighly reset on the 1k.. It should work

I just finished with 2 layers. I seem to have the bevel set now on all but one side toe edge. I ran out of 3m and found some Scotch 700 electrical tape(considerably thinner) figuring I'd add a couple layers and try again. Didn't touch the problemed toe, but everthing else was making contact just nicely.

Finally, I lifted the spine off the hone to see if I could take some steel of the problemed area. Just and barely.

So, I'm putting everything down for the moment and posting:

What can I interpret from this situation and how should I proceed?

ps-I do plan on replacing the original tape I use, the Super 33+.

Here is what I see,

obviously the toe is slightly worn away from previous honing, you are honing dead even (Congrats on that BTW) so you are missing the toe..

two choices here

As you come toward the toe you need to adjust the stroke to follow it, what we love to call "Honing Gymnastics"

or

Continue honing like you are until the edge catches up to the toe..


Although the second option is the "Most Corrective" I doubt I would go that direction as it also wastes the most steel, you can continue to shave the razor by using the first option and each time you hone this razor continue to push the razor into the corrective situation..

LOL. Glen, I ran out of tape anyway ;P It was more like getting lost on the hunt and stopping, taking stock of what's around and what's of use, observing, formulating a plan, staying put and firing off 3 shots.
