I can't really add much to what has already been said other than it's a bad idea to try to learn how to hone and shave with a straight at the same time - that's what I did and while I got the hang of both shaving and honing, it made for a painful, bloody learning curve.
My advice is to get a vintage razor in good condition from eBay and use that to learn honing while you keep your good razor unmolested as a reference for what a shave ready edge should feel like.
