    Default New Finisher-Thuringian

I have done all of my honing on a coticule but have been looking for something to enhance the edge. I can't seem to get a keen enough edge with just the coticule. Today I purchased a vintage Thuringian on ebay and will be using that as a finisher. My plan is something like this: hone normally with coticule down to water only. Then water only on the Thuringian, finishing with lather on the Thuringian. How does that sound? I hope is sounds ok as the Thuringian was some serious money.

I like to use a very light slurry, diluting down to water on thuri's.

You should get a very decent shave from your Thuringian as a finisher after achieving a good 8k edge. Shaving off the 8k is the key to any success on any finisher.

I would experiment with light slury to water only! My personal observation with turi's has been that when coming of an 8k stone to turi, the slury helps a lot in the transition. However, when coming off the 16k Shapton glass, a light slury with some what of a faster transition to water only works good for me. Experimentation is the name of the game!

Depends on the quality of the coticule. If you are coming down from slurry to water on a good, fine coti than you should use the thuri only with water and you need just a few strokes. After that stropping on leather only should bring great results and a sharp and smooth edge.
If the coti is less fine you may need to raise some slurry on the thuri first, afterwards turning to water only.

I think the coticule I'm using is quite good. After working my way down to just water, I did thirty strokes on lather and got a great shave out of it. Almost makes me wonder why I bought the thuringun. I suppose I'll save the lather for the last set of strokes on the new stone.

I don't advise anything but water or light slurry on a thuri

So should I do the lather on the coticule and then go to the thuri? The strokes I did with lather seemed to make a huge difference.

I would not use the thuri with lather, just water. So if its fine for you stay on the coti with lather and than change to the thuri with just water.
