Stones razor dilemma...
Alright... So i currently use kings 1k,6k and Chinese 12k and i love the results... Of course ... Here comes the RAD... I was thinking on buying something soon... Would a norton/naniwa set be an upgrade to my kings? I have never hone on these so i dont know... I did by a razor from SRD and it came shave rdy... I have no idea what stones they used... But the shave from my honing is good enough for me... In my opinion... I can tell the difference but its nothing im concern about... So would it be an upgrade or should i use that money for a nice kamisory!?

Thanked: 1184I use the Norton 1, 4, 8, with a nani12k to finish. I have a Zulu Grey on the way to finish the finish. There are tons of ways for you to go. I think a 4/8 Norton would split up your progression nicely. Then again you could go into naturals and get all kinds of confused :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

If you love your results, don't change a thing. Enjoy the shave and wait for opportunities to arise.
seriously.

If you want a scary glimpse into what HAD* can mount to, see this thread:

*Those paying for their rocks with their honing get a pass on the "disorder" notion.
If you must learn more about hones, keep reading, every "system" and dozens if not hundreds of progressions have been thoroughly discussed. Watch all the honing vids by Lynn and Glen. homework.
Personally I started with Nortons to 8k, a Coticule, also have a ZG on order, barber hones, 6 strops, and will likely get Nagura stones next to use with ZG (a non-standard twist on the "nat" thing).
Ten thousand ways to mix and match honing stones and sequences and oxides and diamonds.

I must agree with Wade - you have no need to change if you are getting good edges off the C12K.
I also know that you will ignore this advice if HAD has you in its grip. I remember a line from an old movie.. "A man can't have too many eagles!" Well, the same thing applies to hones so you'll be in good company.
If you MUST buy a stone, you might consider starting with a Naniwa 12K. The jump from your 6K stone to the C12K is a big one; it must require a lot of work considering how slow they are.
You won't gain much if anything in performance but you'll spend a lot less time getting there. That ought to be excuse enough.

Thanks guys! I like my results on the kings and Chinese stone ... The only thing that i dislike is that the kings are a bit narrow
compared to nanis and nortons... I have gotten use to it but i was thinking about this kit ... You can fill with water and hone anywhere

Thanked: 1184If you don't need the portable thing you could get the 3 hones and a DMT 325 for lapping for around the same price as I recall.

I think the Shapton system is the best if you're going to go synthetic. IMO it's easier to hone on and very reproducible when compared to the Nortons. I learned on Nortons and then got the Shapton 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 30K. The edges off the 16-30K are ridiculously sharp and smooth. They are also easy to lap and last forever. Just my $0.02
