Default Pyramid using 8k and 15k

    Hi...Im testing with a norton 8k and a shapton 15k...

I was making some pyramids using both of them...

I lapped both with the same procedure, norton lapping stone, 600 sand paper, 800, 1000 and 2000.

while Im in the 8k, it feels smoooth....but in the 15k I heard like the razor on a wall....I hear the steel beeing removed from the razor, and see the darknes in the stone....

Is it normal? should I feel the shapton as smooth as the 8k norton?

I will test the razors maybe tomorrw

    Regards,

You might need to round the edges of that hone. I get that sound when the edges of my stone are a little jagged.

Oh, and this is a recipe for a wired edge and the worst shave you can imagine outside shaving with broken glass or sea shells, trust me!

It's also possible that the Shapton cuts more. They are known to be fast cutters. You may wish to hone it on the Norton and just give it a few polishing strokes on the Shapton.

It sounds like you may be using too much pressure on the Shapton. I use the 15k Shapton and it's much much finer than the Norton 8k. It's nearly as fine as the chrome oxide. It does seem to be a fast cutter, mine turns dark very quickly if I use any pressure at all.

How many strokes are you using on either stone?

Im using the same pressure that I use on the Norton, mine is turning dark very quick too. It is finner than the Norton 8k, but I hear a lot of noise while honning...

I didn't round the edges of mine, it never seemed to need it. It's very quiet when honing, though I don't remember how it compares with the N8K (I go from N8k to S8k, then any pyramiding is done between the S8K and S15K).

I wonder if maybe there's something embedded in your hone? Did you lap it on sandpaper or something that may have contaminated it?

I lapped it first with the norton lapping stone, then with 600, 1000 and 2000 sand wet/dry

Under the microscope I only see small part of metal and some black points.....maybe parts of the sand paper?

I think for most razors this would overhone the edge. Just MHO.

If you're using a high quality wet/dry automotive sand paper to lap then you shouldn't have a problem. Lower quality sandpaper can leave particles behind which is bad. You would need to lap it again if that's the case.

that's what it sounds like. You shouldn't get any long-term accumulation of metal if you rinse it off and rub it down with your hand under running water after each use. Once I start getting swarf sticking around between uses I lap my 8k and 15k shaptons against each other, which cleans them off and flattens them again.
