Bit bored today so I honed all these on the Norton 8 and Shapton 16k. I did a pyramid as indicated in the thread title. This is the second time I've done this pyramid and I think I like the results. A couple of razors also got some circles on the 8 and some extra attention where needed (i.e. for the slightly warped De Pews and Joseph Elliott).

I think the Norton 8 and Shapton 16 is a nice pyramid if you have those hones...

Ta. The one on the top left is a Klas Törnblom with ivory scales. The other is a Burrell Top Flight with plastic scales.

I'm definitely curious about this. The pyramid approach to honing has the benefit of reducing the harm done by doing too many strokes on higher grit synthetics, but for most razors 20 strokes on either a Norton 8k or on a Shapton 16k are too many and lead to edge breakdown. It seems to me that the repeated combinations would be even more destructive but I will reserve judgement until I can try it for myself.

Hey Ron, Good to see you back. We met at the KC Meet-up this last October. I had the Boker that Sham was sure was not a Boker. He was correct that it had been over-honed and proceeded to straighten it out for me by dropping back to a 1000 and working up. Remember? Anyway, I have the problem of too many laps on the high-end stones and I'm learning to stop when get to the right place. Picked up a thuringian finisher and it seems to help. Will try a pyramid next time. Good to see your post.

I'm not sure, all I know is that the Jernbolaget was beautiful when I used it yesterday and the W&B was fine today. The Swedish razors have harder steel; so I find they do need more work. I'll report back on the others I honed this way as I use them...
