So I gave it a try. Taped on a chosera 1k to reset the bevel then moved on to the 3k without tape. After that I used the dilicot method on a coticule followed by a finish on a thuringian and chromium oxide. Took some time but got great results and no scratches. Best of all I won't have to wonder which razors were taped or not. I'm pleased.

Thanked: 9I hone different kind of razors. New Dovo's don't need taping because there is pretty good hone wear when they come from factory. Some of vintage razors needs taping because there wont be right bevel without them.
After all I have not noticed lot of wearing when I hone on 1k and set bevel. Most of the time 15-20 strokes are enough. So most of razors I hone without tape. If I use tape for some reason I use it from 1k to 12k.
I was really worried about hone wear when I started honing but it seems to me that if you really don't use pressure when honing then taping is not necessary.

I tried setting the bevel on a Filarmonica without tape and really damaged the spine. I didn't feel like I was using a lot of pressure. I was emulating Lynn Abrahm's 40 circle strokes on each side. Didn't want to risk that happening to another nice razor.

Hey earcutter. I thought about you yesterday as I sliced my earlobe open with a spike point razor. Lol sorry that was off topic but I figured this thread was already beat to death. Why not?
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Too funny!!
You know its funny you bring that up. I thought I was past my earcutting days. Then today, I was kind of racing the clock, using what amounts to a 3/8 that i am not too acquanted with when balm! Oddly enough it was my right ear this time!
We need to start a club!David
