Thread: DMT Clarification

I have a Norton lapping stone but am thinking of replacing it with a DMT. My question is is the DMT lapping plate the same as the DMT 8C that is refered to on this site? If not which should I get?

They come in a few configurations. 1. Size, which is easy enough to figure out. 2. Grit, C= course 325 grit which is closest to your Norton. Then there is f= fine 600 and E= extra fine 1200. 3. With holes and without I prefer without holes for use on razor restore but holes maybe better for lapping with less suction. If you are happy with using the Norton but want something better for naturals or say for lapping a 12k Nani then go with a finer mesh.

Short answer = Yes DMT 8C is the popular lapper.

The dmt lapping plate is courser, larger, and more expensive. Most here use the dmt course 8x3 diasharp, which is the d8c. they are different.

I really like using the DMT 8x3 Diasharp, but for fixing stubborn stones I prefer to start with wet/dry sandpaper (500 grit is what I use) on a piece of smooth, flat tile. It just goes so much faster. Just lay it over the tile and spray it with water till it clings to the tile and push your stone over its surface. Makes quick work of lapping.

Just a warning. The Dia-Flat is the only plate DMT makes for lapping. The rest of them are made for HONING. Just because we use them for lapping, don't blame the company if you misuse it and trash it. Use it under running water. Don't use a lot of pressure. Regularly lift the hone off the plate and rinse out any accumulated swarf. Treat it right and it will last for years. Treat it wrong and you have a flat plate to back your sandpaper.
