Well now that you brought it up you are actually correct to some degree, BUT in the "Good Old Days" the SR's came "Shave Ready" and there was a Cutler or as we tend to call them on SRP a Honemiester to do the major corrections..
So Grandpa probably simply "Maintained" his razor by touching it up on his favorite Barber's hone or Stone which is a bit different from "Honing" a razor
My 2 cents
PS: I agree with Splashone "But isn't that like everything we do that takes skill" I am talking about actual honing not simply touching up a razor...

I apply the same strategy to honing as I do to shaving. If I have the styptic stick within sight, no cuts. So, the safety first approach works for me.
I hone with my 3M faceshield on and DOWN! You never know.

Totally depends upon how you ride your bike. I know some folks who just traveled the continent of Africa, North to South via bicycle.
