Do you want to be a pro honer or do you want to shave with your favorite razors ?
You can't do both if you're successful at a steady flow of razors to hone for others. I was talking to one of the foremost razor honers known to man a few weeks back. We were talking favorite razors and he said he never gets to shave with his own because he is always shave testing those he hones for others .........
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3228Pretty normal, as a mechanics wife about her car and she's likely to say he is too busy fixing others. I'll settle for being able to hone and shave with my own. A great way to take the fun outta something you like doing is to do it as a job.

I think a pro honer is like someone that fixes cars then test drive them. The ideal would be to do enough honing to test shave razor with a full shave each time. I think if you do more than one blade per shave, it would take some of the fun away from it. Just my opinion.

Interesting, had the same conversation with Valery....he seldom gets to shave with his own razor's anymore, or as he mentioned, let alone own them, there's simply no need for him to have a large rotation.
It's the old adage, the one way to ruin something you enjoy is to turn it into a job, because, eventually, it will become a job, just as Bob mentioned as well.

Thanked: 522It seems I take a great deal more care honing for others than I do for myself. I think it is because I am available to touch-up my razors anytime I desire as opposed to the fact that I am not readily available to touch-up the razors I honed for others.
I guess we all have our different motivations.JERRY

Interesting conversation.

I would like to put an edge on my razors that is really comfortable - with consistency.
Still my goal as I have been at it a few months!

Thanked: 734I only want to be able to hone MY razors like a pro. I'm not interested in honing other peoples razors or being known as an authority on the subject. This is a no brainer of a question as far as I'm concerned. Maybe it exposes a selfishness in my nature but I'm only concerned with my own shave. LOL

Thanked: 3228Like Jimmy it took me awhile to get consistently sharp and comfortable edges on my razors and buying over 30 non shave ready razors to bring back to life. It took a long time for a self taught slow learner such as I am but was worth the effort. Luckily never caught the hone acquisition disorder though. Good luck to ya and enjoy the process.
