    I thought a smile came from either poor honing or personal preference. I was under the impression the blade was supposed to be straight

    Very slight smile. Looks like you haven't changed it too much..
    You may need to try diiferent strokes to get contact . Magic marker test may be of help.

    Almost every correctly honed razor I've ever seen has at least a slight smile.

    As others have said, do the magic marker test to get a visual of what is really happening. find a video on "rolling x-stroke", that will be the best way to proceed with this edge
