Thanked: 10Replacing norton 8k with a DT in 4k/8k pyramid?
As stated above I would like to use the DT instead of the norton 8k in the 4k/8k pyramid. The problem is I'm starting at the aggressive side if the pyramid (25 laps). I've read that on the welsh (?) stones less is better. So how would I rearrange the pyramid to accommodate the DT.
I may may be playing with fire here, mixing naturals with synthetics. But I've had really good results from using the hones from AJ.

I haven't had any experience with a Dragon's Tongue but someone may be along who has tried that. One way or the other, if you have a spare razor or two to experiment with give it a shot. The Norton 8k is an awfully good stone though. The DT would have to be really super for me to go to it instead more than the Norton.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 13246I wouldn't do a "Pyramid" I would just do a simply slurry dilution and move on from there..
When you say AJ that is the guy selling the Welsh Slates this is not an actual marked Dragon Tongue.
I have used both and the Grey Welsh State is IME easier to do a slurry dilution with
I don't think the edge will be at the same place as off a well wielded Norton 8k however ...

Thanked: 10Ok thanks Glen. I'll stick with the norton 8k then jump to the naturals.

Thanked: 3215Depends on your stone, I’ve tried a few and they do vary, from finisher to not.
Test yours against the 8K, hone half the blade on the 8K and half on the slate and compare under magnification.
As said the 8K is hard to beat, the slates are fun, with slurries and you will learn a lot about slurries potential and pitfalls.
If you want a no brainer, repeatable finisher… 12K Super Stone, the gold standard, but you probably already know that.

Thanked: 10I have been having success taking my razors that weren't quite There to the DT and then running them up the rest of the set I bought. I thought maybe I could replace the norton 8k with the DT. So I did a kinda sorta pyramided thingy and then ranit up the rest of the set. I now know what it's like to shave off a 1k. It sucked bad. Think shaving with a piece of jagged glass. I think I should of just taken it back to the DT and ran it up the rest but I wanted to try out my new chosera 1k. Great rock by the way, def faster than the norton.

Thanked: 24I agree with Glen here, I shave a couple of times with my razor finished on the DT, it was smooth but I noticed a considerable amount of dragg while shaving. I don't have the norton but I would guess the DT would be a small step down coming of the 8K side.
BUT, I understand you have the 3 hone set from AJ? I noticed that (at least mine) the finest of the 3 hones is actually kind of a fast hone. I have actually butterknived a shave ready blade on a glass and from that point on started with the finest of the 3 stones with slurry and a litle pressure, progressed by diluting the slurry and had a finished blade again within ~15 minutes using only that stone.
I guess what I'm saying is that you can go from the 4K norton, skip the 8K, DT and LM stones and go right away to some slurry on the finest hone of the three
