Thread: New Guy Needing Touch Up Advice

Hello, I just joined this forum, I've been perusing it for weeks now as I've wanted to get into straight razors for years but never did. Over the past month I had the most difficult time deciding which way to go on touching up paste, stones, cortis, ect ect. So many different paths, but this is what I finally chose for me after two weeks of thinking I knew then changing my mind.

OK, first of all I decided I'm going with a Naniwa 12k stone and Balsa paddles with Chromium Oxide for keeping my razor on edge. I will send it to Lynn to be honed or learn it myself in time, but for now this is my path.

However, I don't have a razor yet I ordered a Gold Dollar brand razor cheap strop, Naniaw 12 k stone and balsa paddle, to learn how to do what I want to achieve. Then in a few weeks I have my eye on the Dovo Bismark set with the quality strop, brush, mug soap ect ect. I want to learn how to freshen up the razor on the Naniwa and using the chromium oxide on balsa with my practice razor first before I use my Dovo i will be getting. I may also order some diamond spray .5 as well just to play around.

I have a couple of questions one, please recommend to me a good chromium oxide to use on my Balsa paddle.

Two, please recommend to me a good diamond spray.

Three, how many laps should I do on the balsa paddle to touch up with chromium oxide and how many laps if I'm combining using the Naniwa 12k and finishing with the Crox or diamond spray.

The easiest way to answer your questions is to tell you to watch this video. I have the CrOx stick that Lynn uses in it and use it on canvas and felt, depending on which is handy. Same with the diamond spray. I think others use both on Balsa. Guidance on technique and #s of passes are in the video.

Welcome :<0) As long as you have decided to go with Lynn for a hone I would just ask him to set you up with what you need. I understand your thought process but if your going to spend that much right off..... I would skip the gold dollar and buy a vintage off the classifieds here. It's the only part of your plan I see that will have you going " DOH " later.

Thanks I will look at the classifieds now. Does Lynn sell products is that why I should have him set me up. Sorry for my ignorance I do know from my time researching that he is a guru just don't know all the parts he plays. If so I will purchase from him. I def like the Dovo Bismark.

Thanks again. Forgive my newness here but I went to straightrazordesign.com I didnt see a online store to purchase Lynn's products.

Never mind I found the store. Yes this is where I was going to purchase my set from.

A well sharpened quality razor like you are starting with will be your ticket to the world of "Now I want THIS too!" Most important right now though will be your learning the strop.
There are a number of meet ups that take place in and around NYC so you can get a hands on learning session in with more experienced folks. I am frequently in the NYC area, so if you ever need some one on one instruction, I might be able to help out.
