Thanked: 2How to apply paste to bench hone?
Hello....
I´m applying pastes to a bench hones that I got from handamerican....
which is the best procedure to make it done?
How many applications of paste to the hone before first use?
Can I apply neat´s foot oil in the bench hone if the paste is too dusty after 1 day?

Thanked: 346What form did you get your pastes in? the powder form, syringe form, or chapstick-tube form?
If you got the tubes, run a crosshatch pattern at about 1" intervals across the paddle, then smear it out evenly with your finger. Let it dry a day or two before using.
If you got the syringes, then put a drop every two inches on the paddle and smear them out evenly. Let dry a day or two.
In powder form you need to mix it with mink oil or strop dressing or something like that, then rub it in.
However you do it, the coating should be very very thin, any more and the spine will simply scrape it off the first few times you use it. And it may actually dull the edge until the coating gets thin and even.

You can also use neetsfoot oil or strop dressing to thin it out once you apply it, so it goes on more evenly.

Thanked: 2Hi...thanks for the advice...
I'm using the red paste from dovo, and the Chromium Oxide and Black Diamond pastes from Handamerican.com
I think I will use the neetsfoot oil after applying the the pastes

I am using the black dovo paste and was wondering if i had too much on. it has developed a polished look to it. I mean really black and shiny. i can rough it up with my thumb and it dulls, but then whenever i use a razor on it, it starts polishing back up. Is this a normal way for paste to behave?
It is a really waxy looking paste, and it is difficult to spread on evenly.
When i do strop the blade tends to find the strop sticky for a while. As you draw the blade across, it likes to stop and start therefore forcing you to use more pressure.
Any ideas?

When you say hardwood paddles, you mean......?
Just a flattened piece of hardwood with paste on it? or a piece of hardwood with leather and paste?
