Thanks, Steel! I've got to try this after my next bevel set. I've never felt confident with the PHIG I have (though I have to admit I've neglected it after getting a Nani12, and finishing on other much finer stones when honing with friends: Escher, Gokumyo 20, etc.).

I am at about the same level as you are in regards to honing, I will give this method a shot

Something I forgot to put in the original post is that besides just doing a simple "half X" stroke back and forth I have also used an elliptical stroke. A big circle on the stone if you will. Sometimes it seems this allows for better coverage of difficult or slightly warped blades. Just another possibility with this stone.
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

I shot the Gary Haywood video you posted at his shop. The last conversation I had with him I know he has adopted circles instead of the half strokes but the rest of the method remains the same. I've since gone to circles also with dilucot method but mine are quite large as you describe. Not sure if Gary uses a tighter circle but it all works to a degree, I think the circles give more consistent results with difficult razors.
