Shooter - can you elaborate on "paste"? I'm also trying to learn to hone. Are you just talking about something like chromium oxide?

Thanked: 1936Craig is right on the money & results vary a LOT. I for one have used them and decided they weren't really for me. I like what stones do to my razors & not so much for pastes. To maintain a already shave ready blade, there is also the simple barber hone...was used for decades. I keep a Swaty in my bathroom.
My normal recommendation for anyone in our sport is to learn to shave first, without "knowing" what shave ready is, attempting to hone is not very worthwhile.
Once you have shaving down, learn to take a razor that is starting to deteriorate a bit and tugging a little and touch it up. Once you have touching up down, then progress on to honing.
My recommendation to honing is a simple one...find a mentor. They don't have to be a badged member here, just someone who can proficiently hone a blade. The more experience the have, the more ways they will know how to teach you.
Lastly, in SRP's founder's words: Have fun!Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott
