Check my Bevel!
Hey all,
I am lacking in the hones department; I have 1 x 220/~600 grit combo, 1 x Aloxite Razor Hone (~5000 grit I think) and 1x Escher (could be a green or yellow, not sure)
The stone is the grey-ish one... The black stone in the pic is the slurry stone
Anyway, I sharpened up a Bengall yesterday from scratch, set the Bevel and so forth.
It seemed to shave rather well but I really would like to have at least 2 more stones and something to replace the combo stone (maybe 400/1000) in that mix, another lower grit (~2000) and a higher grit (~8000)
But I was hoping you could give some advice on the bevel. I was gifted a large set or razors and the bevels are 2 times larger than the one I set.
Now the Bengall had no spine wear at all and the Bevel is about 1.5mm wide (~1/16"). Is that too small? Should it be larger?
Here is a pic.
Bevel is on bottom edge.
Thanks all.Last edited by andrewmurray86; 08-09-2014 at 12:25 AM. Reason: more info

The bevel width is set by the thickness of the blade at the bevel and spine to edge angle with or without tape no large difference
If the bevel is narrow bonus it has a thin grind a heavier thicker grind will have a larger bevel
As long as it is even and sharp the rest has no effect on the shave
You have an Escher what else is needed for a finisher
Maybe something to reduce the step between the 2k & 8k will speed,up the process but the rest should be ok
I use a Nani 1k bevel set then norton 4/8k then Nani 12k finisherSaved,
to shave another day.

Thanked: 4826The how many hone do I need depends on your skill. The most talented can have 1K bevel setter and an escher. The rest of us need the range with small steps. My personal series is a 1K and a norton 4/8K combo, then I have a variety of finishers. You already have one of the most highly sought after finishers, so it appears you only need the less expensive hones. Many can squeeze a very nice shaving edge at 8K. The bevel set is the foundation for the rest of the edge. I think you are off to a good start. Substance covered the bevel width fairly nicely as well as his hone set up, which I think you will find that many of us are very similar. I am not sure if it is lighting or reflection or a tiny nick in your bevel. Which reminds me, a 30x loupe can be invaluable.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Well spotted Rez! Indeed there is a nick, I'm not sure when it showed up but it was after my shave this morning and in between when I posted the photo which probably means my lovely wife bumped it, don't tell her I said that though. And yes already have a 30x loupe which has proven rather useful and only cost $3.
Cheers for the info guys, feeling much more confident and pleased with myself.
