Not the most comfortable of shaves.

Has anyone tried this with just water?

If your edge is good, water is fine to get a good shave, not much cushion or glide though.
I've shaved off a Chosera 1K edge, admittedly well stropped and edge was phenomenal.
I would hazard a guess that the finishing stages of honing only offer low % improvement in smoothness?

I'll probably find out tomorrow. I took the same razor up through 12K, CrOx and will strop and see.

I encourage all honers to try the 1K shave test!

Shaved with an Edelweis this morning. Really not as bad as I thought it would be. I was well shaved with no irritation whatsoever. I did only two passes though. Today took the edge through to 12k. We will find out tomorrow if comfort was lacking.

Took it to the 12K+CrOx felt+CrOx leather+80 leather and shaved = smoother. Much, but not all that much sharper, IMO.

I have a high degree of respect for this 1K shave thingy! Who'd've known. All these guys with a bevel setter and a finisher and only that, I'm understanding where they're coming from now.
