Its just traditionally used with oil, however you can do which ever you want. You could use oil and try to make slurry but it will be harder to make a decent amount of slurry and then if you want to go to a thinner slurry you would have to add more oil. Where with water all you have to do is add some more water to dilute the slurry, then if you want to just go to no slurry all you have to do is run it under the faucet. Honestly you can do it however you like if it works for you. Part of the fun of honing is all the experimentation.

Thanked: 3215Oil works and works well. It was traditionally use with many stones for many years.
The problem is, it is messy and can get smelly.
Smith’s Honing Solution is a water soluble non petroleum based lubricant.
Wet the stone with water and add 2-3 drops of Smith. A bottle sells for 5-6 dollars.
If you do not use some kind of lubricant you will clog the pores of the stone and have to lap it to clean it.
You can use just water or with liquid soap also, though soap can be messy as well.
