Thread: Norton slurry transfer

Si,
I did a little honing last night (fruitless, as it turned out) to see how my Norton behaves. After about 10 strokes, there are some traces of grit in the water on the 4K side. I wouldn't say the water is grey, but it's definitely starting to show suspended particles of the stone.
How much water do you have on the stone while you're honing? I have a pretty good puddle on it, since I pour water on it each time I flip it.
The 8K doesn't show any change in the water, but swarf (metal particles) builds up pretty quickly on the surface of the hone.
Again, I wouldn't worry about the slurry too much. Actually, by the time it becomes slurry the grit might cut finer than 4K, so any that transfers to the 8K side won't be as much of an issue.
Lynn in his DVD lays his Norton on a towel instead of putting it in the tray. That would absorb any slurry when you flip the stone over. If you're very concerned about it, that might be the way to go.
Good luck,
Josh

Wash it.
Wash off the slurry from the 4k side and from the station prior to moving to the 8k side and that should handle it. You definitely don't want a 4k slurry on an 8k stone. The converse is not true. It's OK to have an 8k slurry on the 4k side. Same is true with the blue and yellow belgian stones. OK to use the cotigura on the blue side but I wouldn't use a blue stone to get a slurry on a coticule.
